Summer of Hate Love Lace

In honor of the fact that I only have two more repeats and the edging on my Flower Basket Shawl (which unfortunately will have to wait until after the weekend - I doubt my niece and nephews will let me get in any knitting) I'm giving away some beautiful Zephyr Wool-Silk!

Jagger Spun Zephyr Wool Silk
50% Wool, 50% Tussah Silk
1260 Yards (enough for a large Flower Basket)
Color: Iris
Okay - here's what you need to do to win this yarn. Since I'm all about the love...

leave me the name of your favorite love song in the comments. I'll be picking randomly on Tuesday. So you have the weekend to get in touch with your loverly side. (Only one entry per person will be counted. Thanks!)
I'll start you off with some of my favorites:
The Very Thought of You
Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe
Prove it All Night
Drive All Night
For You
You get the picture. And if you want, I'll throw in some cards - sheep or flowers. Or both. Have fun! Can't wait to see what you come up with - I'm a sucker for a love song.
Have a great weekend everyone - hope I come back with lots of fun pool pictures. If not, I've got plenty of work for everyone!

My New Toys. (Ann! I totally understand now!)

Such a hard choice! At the moment, I'd say "Till There Was You" from The Music Man, also covered by the Beatles. Ooh, or "All I Ask of You" from The Phantom of the Opera.

Your Flower Basket looks lovely. I'm just finishing (blocking) the Estonian Lullaby Baby Blanket in Brown Sheep Cotton Fine. Great to knit with.
As for a song: Looks Like We Made It (Barry Manilow). And I would love to have the Zephyr. I could almost write a love song just for it. Lovely yarn!

See You In September!
That was "our song" in the summers when we weren't sure when we'd see each other again after school got out. I was 13 and he was 15 when we started dating. On Aug. 9th we'll be married 30 years, so I guess we kept up.
Love your shawl!

"Unchained Melody" is my favorite love song - think Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore in the movie "Ghost" - that song playing while she was making a clay pot and his ghost was caressing her - oh my god. So romantic, so sexy. :)

But from when I was young, Cherish by The Association.
This is a great thing - having people get those love songs on their mind - helps fuel a nice long weekend!

As for the love song, my vote is for "Tupelo Honey" by Van Morrison.

"Tiny Dancer" by Elton John

I'm going to have to go with "unchained melody." Just the best love song ever. I sang it to my babies the day they were born.
A real tear-jerker and Rhys' and my song is Where've you Been sung by Kathy Mattea (what can I say, she likes country and I've come to appreciate it...sometimes). The lyrics are here. http://www.coquet-shack.com/lyrics/Kathy_Mattea/Whereve_You_Been_0648.php Get a tissue.

"It Must Be Love" by Madness, of course. My hubby and I danced to it at our wedding reception!
Although I have to say that "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds comes in a close second - makes me cry every time. Think I'll play that for our 25th anniversary.
Love the FBS - gotta get me some of that!
Posted by: Amy at July 1, 2005 10:49 AM
My favorite of late is "I Only Have Eyes For You," Art Garfunkel version. Loooooove.
Cara, that is going to be one beautiful shawl -- I can't wait!

Gosh girl, you are zippin' right along with that FBS. It is beautiful. I love that color of yarn you chose. This is on my long "to knit" list--I hope to get around to it one day. Hopefully mine will turn out as good as yours :)
Love songs? Man, I have no idea--some good ones have been mentioned though.
Have a great weekend, C!

I absolutely love I Miss You, by Incubus.
There are several versions of the song, and he sings it so tenderly, especially in the acoustic version. It's precious.
(ps Lyrics sites have so many stinking pop-ups!)
Posted by: Sarah at July 1, 2005 10:57 AM
I suppose I'll have to go with the song we danced to at our wedding, Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet."
Posted by: Natalie at July 1, 2005 10:58 AM
"Pride and Joy" by Stevie Ray Vaughn. My husband sings that to me.
He is also itching to attach a motor to my ball winder/swift combo. I'm sure he'd do the same for you.
Posted by: maryse at July 1, 2005 10:58 AM
One of my favorites was, before Whitney started self-destructing, back when she was gorgeous and had a gorgeous voice, of course: I Will Always Love You.
You just got a swift and ball-winder? Aren't they the BEST?!

Your shawl is just lovely. Very nice job!

Love songs, O! My faves!
I'm going with "our song" for my husband and me,
Taking You Home, Don Henley. I LOVE that song, and it was so apropos for our lives. It goes like this:
I had a good life/before you came/I had my friends and my freedom/and I had my name.../Still there was sorrow/and emptiness/'till you made me glad/Oh, in this love/I found strength/I never knew I had
Chorus:
Oh, and this love/is like nothing I have ever known/Take my hand, love/I'm taking you home/I'm taking you home
There were days/lonely days/when the world/wouldn't throw me a crumb/but I kept on believing/that this day would come
Chorus
Taking you home/where we can be with the ones/who really care/Home/we can grow together/keep you in my heart forever
Etc. with the choruses.
Anyway, it was perfect because my mom had been ill for a long time when I met my husband, and ended up passing away four months before we got married. But before that happened, I'd brought my then-fiance home to meet her, and it was the clincher for me as to whether or not I would marry him, was my mother meeting and adoring him. Then he stuck with me through my mother's passing at the age of 46, and numerous other uglinesses of the sort life always throws. So the song just fits, and it means love to me.
So there you go. :) I haven't heard the song in a few months, so now I'm going to go pull it from my iTunes and listen.
Posted by: Liz Cadorette at July 1, 2005 11:19 AM
Your shawl is beautiful. Two favorites that come to mind: When I Fall in Love and Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini (spelling?) (Somewhere in Time)
Posted by: Ellen at July 1, 2005 11:34 AM
First song that had my heart in a knot each time I heard it? "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke from the 50's. :) "Darling, yooouuuu send me, darling, yooouuu send me, darling you do, darling you do, whoaaa-oooooh..." :)
Posted by: Gloria at July 1, 2005 11:35 AM
My favorite love song is "Everything I Do (I Do It For You) from Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. Ok, so the lead actor sucked in that movies. The song is amazing, and it was our wedding "First Dance" song. Every time I hear it, It reminds me of all the reasons of just WHY I married the man. Not a bad thing in my book. I need constant reminding.

"I'm a Believer" by the Monkees.
I thought love was
Only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else
But not for me
Love was out to get to me
That's the way it seems
Disappointment haunted
All my dreams
And then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her
If I tried
I thought love was
More or less a given thing
The more I gave the less
I got, oh yeah
What's the use in trying
All you get is pain
When I wanted sunshine
I got rain
And then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her
If I tried
It gives me hope that my guy is out there some where.

All You Need Is Lace Love. The Beatles
Your FBS color is so gorgeous. You really capture the way it drapes. Happy holiday weekend!

Well, we danced to "The Way You Look Tonight", sung by Frank Sinatra at my wedding ten years ago. I still smile when I hear it.
And if you include an "in the mood" type song for a love song, then I have to pick "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye. Hubba, hubba!
Posted by: Carrie at July 1, 2005 12:15 PM
I love your FBS! I have been wanting to make one for a long time (since the mag came out) but never knew what yarn to use (I bought the rec. alpaca but have been too scared to use laceweight alpaca for my first lace project!) - I like the way yours looks, so I think I'll try it.
The first favorite love song that pops into my head is R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming." Not your traditionally-recognized love song, sure, but it was definately THE love song of my relationship with one of my beaus who had been a long-time best friend and only later became a lover.
Anyway, have a great weekend!

Our favorite way back 33yrs ago was and still is "See You in September"
Posted by: jill at July 1, 2005 01:03 PM
the flamingo's singing "i only have eyes for youuuuu" -- the beginning of the song always gives me goose bumps - the song is the very definition of 'hauntingly beautiful'.
also "wild horses" by the rolling stones (mick's voice here is incredible) and bob dylan's "ballad in plain d" - both sad but beautiful love songs. dylan's line about "courting her proudly" always gives me a knot in my throat.
Posted by: andrea at July 1, 2005 01:21 PM

Hi Cara,
I've never posted, but read you often. Nothing like a contest to bring out lurkers. :)
It is hard to pick just one song, but at the moment I would vote for James Moody's "I'm in the Mood for Love."
"There I go, there I go, there I go, theeere I goooo
Pretty baby, you are the soul that snaps my control
Such a funny thing but everytime you're near me
I never can behave
You give me a smile, and then I'm wrapped up in your magic
Thereā²s music all around me..."
Love it!
Thank you for the fun,
Rosane.

Your shawl is looking gorgeous! My favourite love song is "Peace" by Andrea Rieniets, something I am sure you have never heard of being from a small independantly released album. It was the song we wanted played at our wedding but it didn't work out and we ended up with something that sounded lovely but didn't really mean anything to us and I now can't remember at all.

Your shawl is so beautiful!!! I have been lurking and drooling over all of the FO's and works-in-progress. I haven't started knitting one yet, but am getting this [] close, and wishing I had started weeks ago.
My husband and I have been married 45 years (as of last week) and our love song has always been "The Twelfth of Never" by Johnnie Mathis. That's how long we will love each other!

This is fun! I have to say the best love song is one that was sung for me by Bobby Sherman (I wish!) - "Julie, Do Ya Love Me" --
Second choice would have to be "My Funny Valentine"

The Very Thought of You

"Slow Dancing" by Johnny Rivers, a meaningful oldie
Posted by: Judith at July 1, 2005 10:35 PM
Speak Softly Love by Al Martino. It was the song DH and I danced to at our wedding. The leader of the band we had at our wedding appeared in the wedding scene of the original "Godfather" movie. He was playing the clarinet during the scene. The movie used an ominus sounding version of the song.

"You Are My Sunshine", and old old song.
I named my little dog Sunshine after that song. And she certainly does bring sunshine and love into my life.

You picked well - love the yarn and color of your FBS. Yummy!

Annie's Song by John Denver
There is also another song that sings softly in the background of my memories. It was the first song I ever danced with a boy to. I have no idea what the name of it was, but it goes like this: "How he makes me quiver. How he makes me smile. With all this love I have to give him, I guess I'm going to stay with him a while."
Posted by: Marlene at July 2, 2005 12:10 PM
I think it's been mentioned, but Lovesong by the Cure is a great one. And Center of Gravity by Yo La Tengo is amazing.
Posted by: Cassie at July 2, 2005 02:36 PM
My favorite love song (and one that is also a favorite of my husband) is "Yours, Yours, Yours" from the muical 1776.
"...'til then, 'til then, I am, as I ever was and ever shall be, yours, yours, yours, yours, yours..."
What a wonderful expression of the love of a long-married couple, separated by their responsibilities and yet still passionately in love with one another.
This would have been my choice on any day, but it seems most appropriate on this particular July 4th.
Thank you for giving so many of us a space to share our thoughts.

Yowsa, I came in late on this one...that shawl is sooooo fine!
Favourite Springsteen lovesong that nobody thinks is a lovesong but I do: "Thunder Road"
Favourite wordless lovesong: "Opening" by Philip Glass
Favourite songs with which I was cruised mercilessly: "Have I Told You Lately" by Van Morrison; "Petite Marie" by Francis Cabrel, and "I Will Find You" by Clannad.
And just because I know you understand, favourite love song by Springsteen which really is a love song: "Human Touch."
It's too damned bad my husband doesn't like Springsteen. He could get everywhere with that "baby, in a world without pity, do you think what I'm asking's too much" line...

Oh, crap, I forgot "Waiting for You" by Knots and Crosses. You probably don't know that band, they're not around anymore, but their compilation is still available...I should send it to you. It's a great one for being still goofy in love with a guy like yours :-)

I'm not sure what the name is, and I don't know who did it, but it got really popular back when "Family Ties" was on and they used it for when Michael J. Fox's character broke up with Courtney Cox's character. I think it's called "At This Moment."

I was interested in your Flower Basket Shawl. I, too am knitting it using a single ply lace weight from Knit Picks--and it looks so different! I must say this isn't my favorite pattern to knit but I'm getting used to it.

That's a tough one to answer. I might have to go with "I Melt With You" by Modern English. (Ah, the '80s. A good decade for music, but a bad decade for just about everything else.)

"It had to be you"~ Harry Connick, Jr. It was our wedding song, and a perfect one.

"In My Life," by the Beatles.
Sung for us at our wedding 24 1/2 years ago by a charming friend.
One of the few love songs out there to admit that we are not usually with our FIRST loves... but that what matters is honoring our commitment.

One of my favorite love songs: "Something In the Way She Moves," by James Taylor
Posted by: Teri R at July 10, 2005 03:01 PM
Ice Cream - Sarah McLaclan would've been our first dance, had we been allowed music at the reception (low-budget wedding, we took what we could get!)
Only You - by Yaz, but I love the a capella remake by Flying Pickets
At This Moment - Billy Vera and the Beaters (which has been mentioned several times, and which I actually think is a depressing love song since it's about the girl leaving the guy, but hey. It's also the Family Ties song referenced above by Jenn, but I thought it's the one where Alex drives across Ohio to meet up with Ellen and stop her from marrying her other boyfriend)
The Glory of Love - Peter Cetera. Yep, I'm a child of the 80's all right. But how can you go wrong with The Karate Kid? Now it just makes me weak in the knees.
Somebody - Depeche Mode. Change "I want" to "I've found" and you've got the best love song ever. Lyrics here.
And I could go on, but I think that's enough. :)
