Pretty In Pink

We're all about full disclosure here at January One, no matter how embarrassing. What you see in the picture above is indeed more sock yarn. You know what? It's really not nice to make fun of people and their disabilities, i.e. obsessive compulsive disorder. Lately I've been really into pink (no, really?) - I don't know. I'm not really what you'd call a girly girl but I like pink these days. I have a couple of pinks shirts heavy in the rotation and a pair of pink cords I like to wear and well everyone should have a few pink days here and there. The yarn on the left is from Felicia over at the Sweet Shop. Not only is the yarn bright and vibrant and PINK, Felicia does a wonderful job packaging everything up. There's a great tag on the yarn and the whole thing came with a lovely personalized note - nice work Felicia. I'm sure the attention to detail will become very apparent when I knit up the yarn. The stuff on the right is Vesper - Neopolitan. Good enough to eat! I'm a sucker for ice cream. When I was growing up we always had ice cream in the house (it's a Philly thing I think) and we'd often have vanillachocolatestrawberry in the freezer. I always thought it was interesting that the vanilla would be gone first. Then the chocolate and lastly the strawberry. Simple pleasures. Sock yarn and ice cream. Tell me, what's better than that?

Nice segue, no? Actually, the jury's still out on these. I'm not sure. I LOVE the reds and pinks and I like them together with the black and grays but I don't know. I'm reserving judgement until the sock is done. This is 17 repeats. I'll start on the heel today. I went to bed at around 12:30PM. Georgie and I had a good night last night - lots of reconnecting, which we desperately needed. We do our own thing so much of the time and when we get really busy it's so hard to feel that connect. We went to dinner and talked about how more than half the married people in our families have gotten divorced and it was awfully sad but at the same time, it brought us closer together - we work hard at what we have and know how fragile and precious our marriage is - no matter how strong as well.

I'm so PUMPED to see how many people have signed up for the Jaywalker KAL. I'm planning a big surprise in January. Should I tell you now? I'm thinking we'll need some big time fun after the holidays to help keep us from those S.A.D. duldrums. How about a race? We'll start sometime in January and see who can knit a pair of Jaywalkers the fastest. What do you think? We'll put lots of specific rules up there (no. of repeats, etc.) and pick a first, second and third winner. Socks That Rock as the spoils of course. Oh and it goes without saying that even though I might race along with you - I will not be one of the winners. Well. I'll be a winner because you're all WINNERS! More details as January approaches.

Cara, I dig the rock and roll of those hot pink n black socks!

Also. I would like to join your knitalong. I am one of the sucker christmas knitters, and I need something to look forward to at the end of the long dark tunnel of December. I mean, I love my family and all, but sheesh!

Posted by: chelsea at November 22, 2005 09:44 AM

But you know you'll win the race. No one knits these faster than you! Love the Vesper, isn't it the best? I saw Jessica (of KPixie) last night at parent teacher conferences and she said the Claudia's Handpaint yarn is just as good as the Vesper. Course, that's sold out, too.

I'd love to join the Jaywalker KAL also but I may need to hold off on casting on until the Christmas knitting is done. Although, that's easier said than done. I loved reading what you said about marriage. It really hit home...

Cara, the Hard Rock socks are lovely! I think they will look fabulous with your pink cords! ;-) I know what you mean about suddenly loving pink - never been a 'girly' girl myself either, but now I can't get enough of red and pink.

I just finished one Jaywalker sock in the STR pebbles colorway. Will probably cast on for the second tonight : )

I'd love to join the Jaywalker KAL! I have some Knitpicks Pansy that I'm going to use for it....

Posted by: Stacey at November 22, 2005 10:17 AM

So, I started my first Jaywalkers last night, and you weren't kidding, they are so. easy. I LOVE this pattern. Thanks for gently coaxing me into the knitalong! :)

Oh, and that yummy neopolitan Vesper? I'm drooling. I may have to go on a sock yarn shopping spree very soon. Screw holiday gifts, I wanna make socks!

Posted by: Sarah at November 22, 2005 10:26 AM

I thought I was brave just joining the KAL with my inability to finish socks. So racing is definitely not happening for me! But I am excited about casting on, but it'll have to wait until AFTER turkey day!

By the way I live outside of Philly and grew up in South Jersey and we always had Breyer's neopolitan and butter pecan in the freezer. And Jack and Jill at lunch in elementary school.

The judge does have to recuse herself ... no one can knit these babies faster than you.

I'm going to have to wait to cast on for a bit here ... I just tallied up my Christmas knitting, and am having an anxiety attack ... but I have some STR in the stash just waiting to join the party.

I'm not usually fond of pink, but I really like the way the Hard Rock is knitting up.

Posted by: naomi at November 22, 2005 11:08 AM

Pink has become one of my favorite colors, too. I didn't like pastels at all and now like them more and more but I still love the bright colors. Georgia's sock yarn is so soft and I want to knit with it right away. It is amazing how much sock yarn has been stacking up lately...so much it hasn't made it into the stash. It could be mostly your fault but that wouldn't be taking responsibility for my own actions and one must do that. A race sounds fun and I'm all for doing ANYTHING that will get me through the hell we call January in Utah.

I'm from York, and we always had ice cream in the freezer, too, oodles of it, usually Rutter's or Breyer's. My mom left the ice cream scoop in the basement next to the freezer, that's how serious we were about our ice cream. At one point in my childhood I regularly ate 6 bowls a day (I ran around a lot).

Love the yarn and the pinks. What no TastyKakes for a Philly grrl?!!!

Posted by: Joan at November 22, 2005 12:28 PM

-I- like the new sock! A lot.

Too funny... I just told another blogger that knitting isn't a competition -- and now there's sock racing.

; )

Yay for staying connected and working at it.

Hi. I started my first sock (a Jaywalker) yesterday, and I already have questions. Where should I ask them? And to whom? Here in the comments? In my blog? To Grumperina herself (but won't she be overwhelmed with all our questions?)? Thanks in advance,

I love pink and black together, almost as much as pink and brown, so I think those socks will be awesome.

I think I'll join the Jaywalkers too, I have some great sock yarns to choose from (Lorna's Laces or Blue Moon) but of course I want to order some STR. We'll see how I manage to hold out.

Posted by: Jessica at November 22, 2005 02:08 PM

Cara, you take such beautiful photographs! I started a Jaywalker last night too but I won't be winning any knitting races!! =)

Posted by: Felicia from sweetgeorgia at November 22, 2005 02:49 PM

Felicia! Thank you! It's so easy when you have such beautiful yarn to work with. ;-)

Posted by: Cara at November 22, 2005 02:53 PM

Oh, and unfortunately I'll never be able to win that competition on who knits these socks faster! I'm just a beginner...

Yeah, hear ya on the pink. I guess people know that when looking at my blog!

I need some pink cords. Those sound amazing!

Posted by: Lolly at November 22, 2005 02:57 PM

Just came back to say I eat ice cream every freaking day...it's my vice. I love the part about you ang G. reconnecting and putting time into your relationship. It's so important and many people don't realize how much.

Posted by: margene at November 22, 2005 03:53 PM

Okay... I'm diggin' the gray/black with the red/pink. A lot. It's a UGA thing. An Alma Mater thing. Okay, so maybe it's a pinch of wishing I was 20 something and AT UGA again... yeah... that. Well. I'm still diggin' the colors.

Posted by: Kathy at November 22, 2005 03:54 PM

Oh, how you mock me! I've been feverishly looking for anybody who sells Artyarns Supermerino in color 130 -- or a sock yarn in a comparable pink-and-brown combo -- for the last 24-36 hours, and have failed at every turn. Now you show me not one, but TWO examples of what I'm looking for -- neither of which are still available. Oh, the humanity!

Posted by: shannon at November 22, 2005 04:43 PM

Love love the Hard Rock sock, i think it's coming out great. I'll have to sit the race out - although the competitor in me is thinking about it. As for my nothern New Jersey ice cream jones, we'd always have Friendly's ice cream in the freezer - not to mention a huge box of ice cream sandwhiches.

Posted by: margaux at November 22, 2005 04:48 PM

You're not going to let this go, are you? It's going to be KAL, KAL, KAL until I finally capitulate right? Am I correct?

OK, so save yourself the trouble and sign me up. Only I'm doing mine in Elann el cheapo cotton. xox Kay

Is it too late to sign up for the Jaywalker Knitalong?? I want to join if it isn't too late. Thanks!

Pink is good, very berry good. And I love the sock you are working on, the colors look great!

Posted by: Teresa C at November 22, 2005 09:37 PM

I'm definately in a pink phase, too-it started two years ago when Alida was born and pink was allowed. I love that ice cream yarn. I grew up in Lancaster, PA-near Phily, sort of, so that makes me an ice cream lover, too. Excuses, excuses. Oh well it works. I know what you mean about marriage being work, Martin and I try to get together to talk as much as we can. We've been married for 10 years so I think we're doing ok. It's good to hear everything is going well with you two. Love those socks!

sign me up baby --- don't know how I missed signing up until now.

Posted by: ann at November 23, 2005 08:13 AM

A race?

Posted by: stephanie at November 23, 2005 09:03 AM

I must say I absolutely love the reds and pinks and black and grey yarn. Where ever did you find it? Is it one of Felicia's wonders I missed?

Posted by: Kitty Kitty at November 23, 2005 05:54 PM

Rob and I just had that same conversation this morning. It is hard work. Congrats for making it this far and for making it a priority!!
