Showcase #5 - GRAND FINALE!!!

Are you ready?! I can't hear you...ARE YOU READY?! This is going to be so spectacular! I hope you LOVE it as much as I do. But first, head on over and CONGRATULATE

CHERYL!

She won SHOWCASE #4. Happy New Year Cheryl!

Okay Johnny! I think the people are ready! Show them SHOWCASE #5!

First up, we've got THREE NEW COLORWAYS of SOCKS THAT ROCK in the NEW BIG HONKING SKEINS (360 yds)!

Now, these new colorways are really something special. Let me start with the one that REALLY, REALLY ROCKS!

PROVE IT ALL NIGHT

Sniff. Sniff. This is MY VERY OWN COLORWAY. FOR ME. DYED FOR ME WITH ME IN MIND. Named after one of my FAVORITE BRUCE SONGS of ALL TIME! DOES IT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!!!???!!!!!! Thank you Tina. Thank you. Thank you! I'm all verklempt. Isn't is so beautiful? Mine. Me. Sniff.

Next up two AMAZING colorways:

ROLLING STONE

PHILOSOPHER'S STONE

Gorgeous! All of them! BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! Turns out, Blue Moon, the fabu team behind STR, has like a bazillion other yarns in their arsenal. When I was ordering the yarn for the contest, I ordered a kit they had which I hope you like:

KID MO in LAPIS

Kid Mo is 90% Kid Mohair and 10% Nylon. The kit is a shibori type scarf called the Urban Bubble Scarf and comes with the requisite wooden balls!

BUT THERE'S MORE! (I swear - there are no ginzu steak knives in this prize package!)

FRATERNAL TWIN SNOW MAN STITCH MARKERS! YAY! There's one of each with a big ring and a little ring. Perfect for all your winter projects.

Here it is all together:

You'll notice I'm also throwing in a glow in the dark sheep and the phenomenal clear orange chibi. Now, I'm not one for chibis - I like my Altoid box just fine, but I do LOVE the needles in here. They are the same hooked end tapestry needles we've come to love, but they're silver, and they are TINY! Perfect for kitchenering toes. I was skeptical that the size would make a difference, but I'm here to tell you SIZE DOES MATTER when it comes to chibi needles.

Now. How do you win? Each week the questions have gotten harder and harder and I've made you search longer to find out all of these inane facts about me. This week will be no different. In fact, this week will be the hardest question of all. In order to win the fabulous prize package shown above you need to:

GUESS WHAT'S IN THE BOX!

This is the gift Margene sent me, which I've been waiting PATIENTLY to open. I will be opening it tomorrow. But you can guess now.

LEAVE ME A COMMENT WITH YOUR GUESS. Right or wrong, they all get entered! COMMENTS WILL CLOSE AT 11:59PM EST JANUARY TWO 2006. WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED TUESDAY JANUARY THREE 2006. ONLY ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. WINNER WILL BE SELECTED AT RANDOM.

I'll give you a couple of clues. The box is pretty dang heavy. When you shake it, something is kind of loose, but not loose enough, say, to be a case of Junior Caramels. AND BE VERY WARY OF MARGENE. Her evilness is documented. She WILL try to throw you off. I can guarantee it.

Thank you everyone for helping me end the year on such a high note. I've really enjoyed these contests, and I hope you have too. There's nothing like getting everyone in on the act of celebrating your birthday! And thank you all for reading my blog - it's nice to know you all enjoy it - and not just when I'm giving stuff away! ;-)

Now go out there and have a GREAT NEW YEAR'S EVE! Be CAREFUL! Be SAFE! Have FUN! See you on the flip side!

L, C

I believe she is sending you a lot of sock yarn, some fiber and a spindle! And maybe some small rocks to get the package more heavy!

Happy New Year and Happy birthday,

TGZ

Posted by: tgz at December 31, 2005 12:55 PM

Now wait a minute. How do I get my hands on some of the Prove it all Night!?!? I MUST HAVE IT!

Posted by: Scout at December 31, 2005 01:03 PM

My guess is that Margene has indeed sent you come Jr. Caramels, along with some spinning roving, some kind of fancy stitch markers and a knitting book or magazine that you didn't know you wanted.

Posted by: ann at December 31, 2005 01:12 PM

Umm...a big box of fiber for spinning and a heavy rock to fool you?

Posted by: Kristina at December 31, 2005 01:13 PM

To be truthful I have no idea about your USA toiletry brands, your candies or even what the current "must have" sock book is across there, but I`m dazzled by your prizes of exotic yarn the likes of which I`ve never seen before! So I`m going to guess wildly....the box contains exactly the same items as Purlingswine got, OK?

Oh, and Happy New Year Birthday!

Posted by: Val at December 31, 2005 01:16 PM

I hope you have a "rock"in birthday....enjoy yourself, pamper yourself, and make sure you kiss the one you love.... Now that the important stuff is out of the way I have to say that "Prove it all night" and "rolling stone" are so beautiful that I must have them(can I just call and ask for them or will they have them up on their website soon?).... and my guess to the box would have to be a pair of handknit socks for you, fiber, spindle, a birthday card, maybe some yarn and knitting items

Posted by: Leslie at December 31, 2005 01:16 PM

I think some sort of container, some kind of candies or foods, and a book (possibly on spinning), oh and some special sock yarn.

Posted by: pixie at December 31, 2005 01:25 PM

Let's see. I think it's a new, cool, knitting book and some really cool sock yarn so you can make HER a pair of socks. HA!

Posted by: Scout at December 31, 2005 01:38 PM

something camera related?

Posted by: lauren at December 31, 2005 01:39 PM

I'm guessing a spindle, fiber, yarn, Socks that Rock (in the Brooooce colorway and maybe a Utah rock thrown in for good measure), and a signed Nancy Bush book.

Posted by: Kat at December 31, 2005 01:43 PM

Well, I would guess (and I'm hoping beyond reasonable hoping that I get in the random drawing even if I'm wrong. Because I always am. Wrong. ) One of Nancy Bush's sock books, perhaps vintage socks, some wonderous handcream product and chocolate, perhaps even junior caramels (which we just bought but haven't tasted yet)
Happy New year! And a wonderous birthday!
xo

Posted by: sandy at December 31, 2005 01:46 PM

***evil cackle***

I wish I had been as generous and creative as everyone thinks I am!

Happy New Years Eve;-)

Posted by: margene at December 31, 2005 01:57 PM

...and you were wondering how you got dragged into my post involving STR?

You have an obsession, in case you hadn't already figured it out for yourself. ;o)

As for your gift, I can't even begin to guess what she could have sent you, but I can't wait to find out what it is!

Posted by: JessaLu at December 31, 2005 02:06 PM

Socks that Rock, and actual rocks to make it heavy.

Happy New Years and Happy Birthday. I'm almost halfway through my first pair of Jaywalkers in Lorna's Laces, they're so pretty.

Posted by: Jessica at December 31, 2005 02:07 PM

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CARA!

Posted by: FAinPA at December 31, 2005 02:15 PM

Happy Birthday! And oh, boy, is that Rolling Stone yarn gorgeous. *drool*

Posted by: Chris at December 31, 2005 02:22 PM

I vote for spinning fiber along with some tasty chocolate in some form. Happy Birthday and Happy New Year wishes.

Posted by: Pumpkinmama at December 31, 2005 02:33 PM

Bobbins for the new wheel, and maybe some jam. (Glass jars of jam are *heavy*!)

Posted by: naomi at December 31, 2005 02:36 PM

Let's see. Sock yarn, maybe some Socks That Rock. Some pretty stitch markers. A knitting book, let's say "Knitting Vintage Socks". And a brick, wrapped in bubble wrap to pad it. No knitting needles though, don't want them bent or broken by the brick.

Posted by: Jenn at December 31, 2005 02:45 PM

How bout a lump of coal? Oh wait, that's for bad girls...

Posted by: Julsey at December 31, 2005 03:11 PM

Well, I checked with Margene and damnit, she won't tell me what's in the box. What? Shutup, you knew I'd try to cheat. I've been trying to win one of these showcases for weeks, it seems.
So, my guess? It's something that will make you laugh. Does that count? Happy Birthday again. Enjoy Cara EVE!!!

Posted by: Carole at December 31, 2005 03:11 PM

Easy. It's yarn. With marbles thrown in for weight and to throw you off ;)

Posted by: Sara at December 31, 2005 03:25 PM

Ok, so I won't win either, and everyone took my guesses. I was going to guess a niddy noddy and/or a skein winder (you know, one of those big umbrella things), but the box isn't big enough. So I'll settle for a cool box to stuff yer knittin' stuff in, already stuffed with a skein or two of rockin' yarn and some knitterly doo-dads. Sigh. So unoriginal. But have a splendiferous New Year's Rockin' Birthday and enjoy WHATEVER Margene sent ya! Can't wait to see what it/they is/are!

Posted by: Susan Maurer at December 31, 2005 03:29 PM

I'm guessing...sock yarn, a book, and something you can only get in Utah.

In any case, Happy Birthday!

Posted by: Christy at December 31, 2005 03:49 PM

I'm guessing yarn, chocolate in some form, and rocks.

Posted by: Kathy at December 31, 2005 03:51 PM

I'm guessing a book (maybe knitting vintage socks - do you have that?), some candy (mmm, junior caramels) and some roving to keep it all from banging about too much.

have a FABULOUS birthday!

Posted by: Anne at December 31, 2005 03:58 PM

My guess is that you're getting some yarn, and maybe something handknit. And fancy needles. That would be great!

Posted by: Rosemary at December 31, 2005 03:58 PM

My guess is some Utah sock yarn, Nancy Bush's "Knitting Vintage Socks" maybe even signed, and something yummy.
Happy New Year and Happy Birthday!!!

Posted by: Karen at December 31, 2005 04:09 PM

Margene has sent you three hairs from Galadriel's golden head, because that is the only thing you could possibly be wanting when faced with so many Socks That Rock. Wrapped around a brick?

More likely, though, I'd say handknit socks and a good winter book.

Posted by: KathyB at December 31, 2005 04:16 PM

My guess is food of some sort...cookies...candy...there will also be sock yarn and maybe a mug with a sheep on it :o)

Posted by: Stacey at December 31, 2005 04:17 PM

How about.... yarn and a book. Like that. And... candy.

Posted by: Adelle at December 31, 2005 04:19 PM

my guess is candy, tea, cookies, yarn, books and a teapot

Posted by: Cheryl at December 31, 2005 04:23 PM

This is the best New years eve ever!!! I am so excited to have won!!!! :))))) THANK YOU!!!

Posted by: Cheryl at December 31, 2005 04:24 PM

I first thought book, and am still thinking book. A sock book (of course). And chocolate. And stitch markers to make noise.

Happy Birthday Tomorrow!

Posted by: melissa at December 31, 2005 04:28 PM

i think it will be yarn and goodies and a knitting book of course. hope what ever it is that you enjoy it.

Posted by: Lynn at December 31, 2005 04:33 PM

I'm guessing good chocolate, good yarn, and probably a couple of good knitting books?

Posted by: Janine at December 31, 2005 04:42 PM

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's completely non-knitting related. Candy defnitely, and maybe something of Bruce... boxers, perhaps? ;)
And rocks. I like the rocks.
Happy Caraeve!

Posted by: Sarah at December 31, 2005 04:48 PM

a book about spinning and some fiber!!!

Posted by: gleek at December 31, 2005 04:48 PM

Definately a spindle ! And a lot of goodies.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !

*H*A*P*P*Y* *B*I*R*T*H*D*A*Y* !

Have a great one. xxx

Posted by: Emma at December 31, 2005 04:50 PM

Something hand thrown, like some pottery with a twist on "rock" or "spinning" done in a colorway of one of your jaywalkers. Just guessing. The showcases are wonderful! The socks are fabulous, and I loved the way you posed them in the photograph! Happy Birthday. My Mom's 75th is tomorrow also. My 17 yr. old's is today! Fun time! Happy New Year!

Posted by: lindar at December 31, 2005 04:56 PM

i guess some chocolate bear pooh (that is really funny, margene), an autographed copy of nancy bush's vintage socks and a whole bunch of sock yarn to go with the book, and some gorgeous stitch markers.

oh to win this prize would be heaven. i just celebrated my birthday on christmas eve!!!

have a happy birthday, cara!

Posted by: adrienne at December 31, 2005 05:06 PM

I think it'll be sock yarn, patterns, and a brick of fudge.

Happy Birthday...

Posted by: chawne at December 31, 2005 05:12 PM

Book: Kintting in the Old Way, a box of gummy bears and a couple of skeins of STR. I'm totally guessing :)

Posted by: Dene at December 31, 2005 05:13 PM

I'm going to have to guess sock yarn and some sort of tasty treat...probably chocolate...I think that the box is too small for a spindle and you didn't have the wheel when she mailed it. I think the heaviness is rocks to trick you.

Posted by: Shanidy at December 31, 2005 05:23 PM

STR yarn, a Bruce related item, and some type of sweets! Happy Birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day.

Posted by: Christine at December 31, 2005 05:23 PM

Oh this is a hard one (but equally hard for all). OK I couldn't even find a clue over at Margenes. I am going to guess... yarn?...sock yarn?, treats? and knitting accessories? Yeh...that's the ticket.

Posted by: Susan at December 31, 2005 05:32 PM

I think I read where Margene did some knitting for Nancy Bush's Vintage Sock Book so I am guessing that she has sent you an autographed copy with a special note to you. Maybe even related to JANUARY ONE. I think that there is probably some more STR yarn in there. You are going through it so fast!! I think I have got to have some. Your blog got me started on my own Jaywalkers and I am so loving it!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Posted by: emmy at December 31, 2005 05:32 PM

Let's see, Margene has a documented history of evil, the box is heavy...OMG, CARA!!! DON'T OPEN IT!!! IT'S BRUCE'S HEAD!!!!! (Like, wasn't Gwynnie's head in a box in Seven and...)

Posted by: rock chick at December 31, 2005 05:37 PM

Oooooh, I can't resist this one! I'll guess that she sent you a spindle, some practice fiber, and a book of patterns (for socks, I bet). That should make for a nice clunky package. ;)

Posted by: Liz at December 31, 2005 06:12 PM

Hmmmm....something yummy, something yarny, something wonderful...there, that'll work!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

patrice

Posted by: patrice at December 31, 2005 06:17 PM

So, what was the answer to the showcase #4 question?

Posted by: Vern at December 31, 2005 06:23 PM

Hmmmm.... I think she made you a pair of Jaywalker socks to add to your collection, a spindle, potatoes for weight and the Vintage Sock Book (it is a tad heavy).

Did I win????

Posted by: Kim at December 31, 2005 06:32 PM

Happy Birthday!

Best wishes for the New Year from Frankfurt, Germany.

Posted by: Beate at December 31, 2005 06:37 PM

Happy New Year! Happy Birthday!

Posted by: Gina at December 31, 2005 06:42 PM

I think that inside that bos, is another box, wooden, hense the rattling and heavyness. Then, there is sock yarn, needles, markers, and something really differnt that only she would think of, and the rest of us are mere mortals when it comes to that kind of deviousness...

Posted by: Cerridwen at December 31, 2005 06:44 PM

Yarn? and, um, rocks?

Happy Birthday! Tell me, when you were little, did you think everyone just stayed up until midnight on December 31st because they were excited for your birthday? ;P

Posted by: Patti at December 31, 2005 06:53 PM

OK, here goes. The box contains some chopsticks to get "in the mood" for translating Japanese patterns. (They'll also double as stitch holders.) AND since you like Socks That Rock, there are some rocks in there for "value-added" oomph. But the star of the show is some special roving!

Happy, Happy Birthday! Can't wait for Crossed In Translation KAL!

Posted by: Beverly at December 31, 2005 07:09 PM

ah, such amazing prizes! i know, i already "won" my own share of str, but i n-e-e-d these prizes too ;-)

so, my guess: something that rocks! because you do too!

happy birthday! it's officially 1 january in norway.

kiss kiss,
k

Posted by: kris at December 31, 2005 07:19 PM

I'm going to guess that she sent you some knit handwarmers, sock yarn, Vintage Socks, and Junior Caramels.
Happy new year and happy birthday!

Posted by: terby at December 31, 2005 07:45 PM

Chocolate yarn. :)

Posted by: Janice in GA at December 31, 2005 07:57 PM

Happy happy HAPPY Birthday to you!!!! YAY! Hope all your birthday wishes come true.
Also, how cool is that?? A STR colorway designed with you in mind! Awesome!

Posted by: Maritza at December 31, 2005 07:59 PM

Happy New Year and Happy Birthday to you!! Thanks for hosting two very cook knitalongs :) Blessings to you and yours.

Posted by: Kim at December 31, 2005 08:07 PM

should say cool, but cook-ing would be good too :)

Posted by: Kim at December 31, 2005 08:08 PM

I'm going to say sock books, to encourage you to find patterns that weren't *cough* Jaywalkers.

Happy birthday!

Posted by: Kris at December 31, 2005 09:20 PM

I think it is a transcript of your blog so far, bound into a book, with a knitted, felted cover. There is also a calendar for the year 2006, in which every day is January One.

Posted by: B. at December 31, 2005 09:20 PM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! (a few hours early, unless you don't read this until tomorrow...then it will be o.k)

Anyway! There's a brick taped to the middle of the box with some spinning fibers...maybe some silk/wool blend..wrapped around some of those caramel jr. mint. On the other side of the brick, I'm thinking some Lorna's or maybe more socks that rock!

Posted by: Stacey S at December 31, 2005 09:29 PM

Happy Happy -- hope you're getting ready to begin a wonderful, glorious day.

Posted by: mrspilkington at December 31, 2005 09:52 PM

Hmmm... I'd have to say a spindle, some roving (Fleece Artist maybe), some fantastic yarn possibly with cashmere. Whatever it is, I am sure you will enjoy it!

Posted by: Robin at December 31, 2005 10:39 PM

Oooh, I think it's a travel-sized spinning wheel, y'know, one that folds up.

Whatever it is, I hope the box contains the object you want the most.

Happy happy, and thank you so much for writing your blog!

Posted by: anne at December 31, 2005 10:56 PM

Oh, I couldn't begin to guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some STR in there, and maybe a paperweight? (A really heavy paperweight??)

Posted by: --Deb at December 31, 2005 11:27 PM

Firstly, Happy Birthday Cara! Secondly, I hope you give us canucks an equal shot at the Grand Prize - it is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! My guess is some already finished Jaywalkers in a colourway you haven't even imagined (maybe that is why hers aren't done yet!), some Junior Caramels, a knitting book and definitely some rocks (or maybe they are REALLY heavy stitch markers masquerading as rocks) - maybe the rocks are in the socks made of Socks that Rock yarn!

Posted by: Cynthia at December 31, 2005 11:45 PM

Hmmm...some fleece and a drop spindle and a funky 2006 calendar and chocolate/candy? No matter what, have a very, very happy birthday!

Posted by: Jessica at December 31, 2005 11:48 PM

She sent you a Zen rock garden. I truly think so.

:)

Posted by: claudia at December 31, 2005 11:50 PM

I just watched the ball drop in NYC on tv....so now it's your birthday. Happy Birthday! Hope it is a great one.

Posted by: cyndye B at January 1, 2006 12:06 AM

Umm... I'm guessing SOCKS! and yarn.

Posted by: Becky at January 1, 2006 12:09 AM

I think it is a handmade journal. Sock yarn, some tea. Also, some Junior Caramels, and a autographed book from Nancy Bush, her Vintage Sock Book.

Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Gaye at January 1, 2006 12:25 AM

Oh, my dear, sweet Cara. Happy birthday, first and FOREmost. Second, I've had a margarita or four to bring in the new year, so forgive, and Happy New Year. Third, fourth, fifth and forever, it could be a box of rocks and still ROCK. Margene rocks. You rock. Socks rock (ecspecially Jaywalkers). And January One Birthdays Rock.

Happy Birthday.

Love you, Vicki.

Posted by: Vicki at January 1, 2006 01:40 AM

Alles Gute zum Gebirtstag!! Or in English Happy Birthday!!! How old are you now, 25? ;))
Now to that package. I would say from the shape of it, it's a red convertable BMW with leather interior. I think she also threw in some chocolate kisses to fool you when you shake the package. I can't wait to see you sitting behind the wheel! Oh I forgot, she also put in two tickets to Germany so you can come and visit me. What a generous friend!

Posted by: Kimberly at January 1, 2006 02:07 AM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Posted by: Morgan at January 1, 2006 02:28 AM

A traveling type small spinning wheel.

Or a book about Bruce, some roving, and some sock yarn.

Or a framed picture of the Mormon Tabernacle.

Oops, that's three guesses. ;-) Happy BDay!

Posted by: Jenny at January 1, 2006 04:06 AM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! january one is already almost over here in australia so i wanted to make sure i wished you a wonderful wonderful birthday.

not sure what is in the box...but i'll take a guess that it doesn't contain either a live animal or any perishable products. how about a a full pedicure kit to keep that jaywalker encased tooties looking good!

Posted by: jacqueline at January 1, 2006 04:54 AM

Well, I was thinking maybe a pair of handknit socks, until I read your description of the box. Now, I have no idea, but since it's from Margene, it's bound to be fabulous. Enjoy whatever it is, and have a very happy birthday and a prosperous new year! Cheers!

Posted by: Rachel at January 1, 2006 06:32 AM

Good morning sunshine! and Happy, happy, happy birthday! It may not be a sunny day outside here in Nova Scotia, but I sure hope the sun shines on you today, you sock-makin' whiz!

You and your amazing talents (both for socks and photos) always brighten my day!

Here's to another year of YOU! *clink*

(that would be a mimosa toast... it's a little too early in the day for straight champagne)

Posted by: Steph VW at January 1, 2006 08:31 AM

Happy birthday Cara!!...and happy new year!

My guess for the box: yarn, a Bruce cd, candy and rocks.

Posted by: Angelia at January 1, 2006 08:38 AM

I think Margene has worked really hard and sent you the complete translation for CIT. And maybe some pet rocks or even better chia pet rocks. Happy Birthday

Beth T.

Posted by: Beth at January 1, 2006 08:56 AM

No matter what you get in your box, Hippo Birdies to Ewe! and I hope at least something in the box is made of wool or chocolate.

Posted by: KarenK at January 1, 2006 09:01 AM

Chronia Pola Cara from Boston! As they say in Greek, na zisis me agapi, igia ke hara.

Hope you have an awesome day. Can't wait to see what Margene has sent you.

Happy New Year!

Posted by: Manise at January 1, 2006 09:10 AM

Happy Birthday! I know you're celebrating in style, with whatever's in the box. I'm going to guess that it's a beautiful container, packed with fiber for spinning that will make you want to pass the frustrating learning phase IMMEDIATELY, plus a book about spinning or fiber, and some delicious treats.

Posted by: Kim at January 1, 2006 09:10 AM

Hmmm... I dunno.. ice skates? I think she sent you ice skates..with some nice wool sock yarn to knit up socks an pom poms for them... and oh she had to send a bit of chocolate right?
Now seriously happy birthday! THat's what I really came here to say!!

Posted by: Denise at January 1, 2006 09:11 AM

Happy Birthday.

Posted by: Sarah HB at January 1, 2006 09:36 AM

I'm guessing roving and a book.

Posted by: Erica at January 1, 2006 09:57 AM

Too heavy for yarn and too rattley for books - maybe bobbins for the new wheel? Hope you love it! Happy Birthday!

Posted by: AmyDe at January 1, 2006 10:07 AM

Happy Birthday! I'm guessing some heavy candy or chocolate surrounded by fiber and sock yarn so it doesnt move so much.

Posted by: Tania at January 1, 2006 10:13 AM

Hi Cara.........I noticed you removed your comment field on YOUR BIRTHDAY......so.........I'm not even going to guess what Margene put in that box, as she is one "foxy" lady, even though I would LOVE to be the prize winner of all of those fabulous prizes.....but instead, I am going to wish you a
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Kim at January 1, 2006 10:26 AM

happy birthday!

my guess? A Nancy Bush sock book, five pounds of cinnamon bears and some super-duper sock needles with Utah sock yarn. Yes, she's tricky, but I think it's sock related :)

Posted by: Kristen at January 1, 2006 10:28 AM

Never mind the contest, open the box, open the box! Happy Birthday to you!

Posted by: Amy at January 1, 2006 10:44 AM

Posted by: Michelle at January 1, 2006 11:20 AM

Happy New Year's Birthday, Cara - what a great birth date!

Let's see... rock salt, an Fort Knox ingot-sized chocolate bar, something sock-related, and sheepy *diaper pins* to use as stitch markers, 'cause you a New Year's Baby!

Posted by: S.Kate at January 1, 2006 11:26 AM

Happy Happy Birthday Cara!!! I hope this year rocks!

Posted by: amanda at January 1, 2006 11:37 AM

Happy happy birthday!! I'll be joining you in 36-ville later this year.

Posted by: carole at January 1, 2006 11:38 AM

I just knit a skein of STR in Iolite, but not in the Jaywalker pattern. Maybe next sock.

I hope your birthday is fabulous, Cara.

Posted by: Snow at January 1, 2006 11:44 AM

Happy Birthday! With so many of us guessing sock yarn, rocks, and something from Nancy Bush (my official guess, there), Margene has probably outwitted us all and put in something Bruce Springsteen. I've never been so curious about someone else's present before!!

Posted by: Ruth at January 1, 2006 11:46 AM

Humm, could it be that she sent you a pair of Jaywalker socks knit with STR to wear on January 1st? ;)

Posted by: may at January 1, 2006 11:52 AM

Happy birthday and Happy New Year Cara!

Posted by: may at January 1, 2006 11:53 AM

I think there must be some lip balm and a cuticle stick in there, sock yarn, a signed copy of Knitting Vintage Socks and chocolate.

Posted by: Nathania at January 1, 2006 12:18 PM

Happy Birthday, Cara!
I'm guessing that there's yarn in there, of course, and some birthday chocolate as well. Have a terrific day and may all your projects come out perfectly!
XOXOXOX
Maria

Posted by: Maria at January 1, 2006 12:27 PM

Happy Birthday, Cara! I agree with the masses - sock yarn and spinning supplies (because you've been good, there might be candy too). Let's have a great knitting year together, shall we? Cheers!

Posted by: Donna at January 1, 2006 12:28 PM

i think margene sent you a pair of swedish clogs.

happy birthday! happy new year, too!

Posted by: shobhana at January 1, 2006 12:35 PM

Could be a pile of magazines.

Posted by: Karen Newton at January 1, 2006 12:54 PM

Happy birthday! Have a good one!

Posted by: Robyn at January 1, 2006 12:58 PM

Happy birthday! I'm guessing (just for sheer randomness) a chocolate sheep wearing four mismatched Jaywalker socks! Enjoy whatever it is!

Posted by: Debbie at January 1, 2006 01:08 PM

Happy Birthday!!!!

My guess would have to be some rocks to go with Socks that Rock and to drive you crazy with wondering about the rattling. The real gift must be a book and some yarn and probably some wonderful stitch markers. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be exactly what you wanted, but didn't even think of.

Posted by: Lori at January 1, 2006 01:14 PM

Happy Birthday!!

I'm terrible at guessing... so i'm hoping it's some more yarn, a tool for your new spinning wheel and of course perhaps some jr. caramels!

Enjoy Your WONDERFUL DAY!

Posted by: margaux at January 1, 2006 01:22 PM

Happy birthday! :D

Posted by: jess at January 1, 2006 01:23 PM

Happy Birthday! (Margene sent me over.)

I'm guessing she sent you some T-shirts, ginger candies, chocolate and Koigu.

Posted by: stitchnsnitch at January 1, 2006 01:44 PM

A skein of STR, a box of Junior Caramels, a signed Nancy Bush book, and a tube of lip balm.

Happy January One!!!!!

Posted by: Norma at January 1, 2006 01:46 PM

Some petrified birthday cake, chocolate, needles, and rocks to make the box heavy.

Posted by: Rebecca at January 1, 2006 02:23 PM

Something that shifts around and the box is heavy? Hmm. A nostepinne, maybe a niddy noddy. Of course, fiber. Maybe even yummy silk or merino or even BFL?

Posted by: MJ at January 1, 2006 02:27 PM

Happy birthday! Maybe the box contains a cake mix (hence the heaviness), a drop spindle, some chocolate (doesn't every birthday include chocolate?) and maybe, just maybe, some tiny stitch markers that look like slices of cake! No matter what, enjoy your day!

Posted by: Leslie at January 1, 2006 02:45 PM

Happy Birthday!!!

Posted by: meowgirl at January 1, 2006 03:00 PM

A very happy birthday, Cara!

Posted by: Wendy at January 1, 2006 03:05 PM

Your own knitted mini-Bruce.
Love and Birthday Wishes.

Posted by: LibbyLu at January 1, 2006 03:08 PM

Happy Happy Birthday! I will go with non STR sock yarn, chocolate and stitch markers!

Posted by: Rebecca at January 1, 2006 03:23 PM

Happy Birthday to you!!! Hope that it exceeds all of your expectations!

Posted by: sarah b. at January 1, 2006 03:33 PM

3 books and yarn for 2 pairs of socks. Maybe some very interesting stitch markers and/or needles.

Posted by: Wannietta at January 1, 2006 03:53 PM

Happy Birthday!

I think it's books, with yarn to keep them from shaking around too much. :)

Posted by: Ariel at January 1, 2006 03:56 PM

All that yarn is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. Seriously.

Happy birthday, Cara! You're having a Bilbo Baggins birthday -- in the first of the LOTR trilogy, Bilbo had a birthday, but in hobbit tradition, the birthday person gives presents instead of receiving them.

No idea on the box... How about a mini sheep? Though there's no air holes.

Posted by: Anne at January 1, 2006 04:03 PM

Yarn, fibre (Canadian,eh)and books for weight are my guess. Many happy returns on your special day!!

Posted by: Daisy at January 1, 2006 04:27 PM

I believe that Margene sent you some wonderful silk roving (tussah if it's from thesilkworker, bombex if it's fleece artist) and/or some really fun yarn, a bar or box or jar of some wonderful feminine pampering product (soap, lotion, a candle, bath product, you get the idea) some fiber fooferaws, such as a chibi, kacha counter, stitch markers, orafice hook, a book, which may not be fiber related, and a nice note.
I'm probably way off, but it was fun imagining, thank you!

Posted by: Enjay at January 1, 2006 04:47 PM

I'll guess that the package contains a drop spindle, some fiber, and a bag of Hershey's Kisses! Happy Birthday!

Posted by: Danielle at January 1, 2006 04:58 PM

I would guess some socks that rock, some junior caramels and some fiber for spinning. Hope you have a great birthday!

Posted by: ashley at January 1, 2006 05:02 PM

I think she's sent you yarn and fiber that you can't get from where you are, or wouldn't have purchased for yourself.

That, or another metric butt-ton of STR. :)

Happiest of Birthdays, Cara! May your year be filled with joy, prosperity, and of course -- Socks That Rock. :)

Posted by: Liz Cadorette at January 1, 2006 05:25 PM

It's got to be something to do with socks, but if it rattles too??? A lot seem to be going with a spindle (my first thought) but heavy, hmm. Ok I go with the Vintage Socks book, a couple of skeins of something really gorgeous and some sock yarn. Whatever is in there, I hope you have a really Happy Birthday and a Happy New Year.

Posted by: Tracy at January 1, 2006 05:59 PM

Happy Birthday!!!!

Posted by: Shara at January 1, 2006 06:01 PM

Happy Birthday!!! I guessing Margene sent you 10 lbs of junior carmals, and some fiber for your new wheel. Have a great day!!

Posted by: Lisa at January 1, 2006 06:08 PM

Happy happy happy happy birthday!

I think the box contains chocolates, at least two boxes of exquisite tea, and enough handpainted sock yarn to keep you in socks for a year!!

Happy birthday!

Posted by: melanie at January 1, 2006 06:09 PM

Happy happy birthday! I love the colorway dyed just for you, it's really beautiful! My guess is that Margene sent you a miniature poodle. That's where the whimpering is coming from, Cara!

Posted by: grumperina at January 1, 2006 06:12 PM

More Socks that Rock Yarn, the Nancy Bush Vintage Socks Book, some chocolate rocks, caramels and mints. Oh, and some sock-blockers.

Happy Birthday!

Posted by: La at January 1, 2006 06:13 PM

Happy Birthday!

My guess: a niddy noddy and a big bag of candy.

Posted by: Steph at January 1, 2006 06:28 PM

I think you get everything necessary for life: yarn, chocolate, tea and a book.

Posted by: Bev Watts at January 1, 2006 06:32 PM

She sent you a DVD set with all kinds of projects on it plus some yarn to start with.

Posted by: Elizabeth at January 1, 2006 07:47 PM

Those colors are great!!

Happy birthday and happy new year!!

Posted by: Melanie at January 1, 2006 07:50 PM

Yarn, stitch markers, and a drop spindle? Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be great.

Happy Birthday!

Posted by: Cece at January 1, 2006 07:51 PM

I think the package contains a knitting book and yarn.... maybe some stitch markers too. Happy Birthday.

Posted by: Sue at January 1, 2006 08:13 PM

A moon rock, socks that rock, and a sock for your rock.

Happy bd :)

Posted by: Aija at January 1, 2006 08:17 PM

Happy Birthday 36th Cara! I'm guessing 36 Utah rocks for every year you've been on this earth, a signed Nancy Bush sock book (trying to lure you away from Jaywalker), caramels and kisses, and handspun sock yarn (no STR - you've already got that market cornered) ;-)

Posted by: kandy at January 1, 2006 08:39 PM

Happy birthday and happy new year, Cara! While I'm here, I'll hazard a guess as to the contents of the box: OK... sock yarn, obviously; yummy-smelling soap that's good for knitting hands; something sheepy (earrings? stitch markers?); and, um, three cans of tomato soup and a package of crackers. :)

Posted by: alison at January 1, 2006 08:40 PM

Happy Birthday, Cara!!!!

I think Margene sent you some spinning fiber and a niddy noddy. With some yummy chocolate thrown in. Whatever it is, hope your birthday is fantastic, and that your 2006 is filled with happiness!

Posted by: Sarah at January 1, 2006 08:48 PM

Happy Birthday Cara! I hope you had a wonderful day and have a wonderful year ahead.

Posted by: Jo at January 1, 2006 08:57 PM

Happy Birthday! My guesses have all already been taken (I'm late to the party!), but I'll stick 'em out there anyway.
Some socks for you, a spindle, some yummy roving, some sort of sweet treat and rocks of course!
Love the bruce colorway - such a special birthday gift to you!
Can't wait to see what's in the box!

Posted by: Jenn at January 1, 2006 09:47 PM

Happy, happy Birthday!! In the box are some socks full of rocks a journal, something Brucey, a birthday card, and some jr caramels. Which thankyouverymuch for introducing me to. A box of those babies goes down so fast and all you(I) want are more, more, more.

Posted by: michelle at January 1, 2006 10:47 PM

NO Guess on the box, but Happy Birthday!!!!

Posted by: Christine at January 1, 2006 11:07 PM

Happy Birthday! I am guessing it is handmade wooden sock blockers and a "No Jaywalking" sign.

Posted by: Kristie at January 1, 2006 11:08 PM

Happy B-day and happy new year! Hurray for the new 360 yards of STR in 6006 and the new colors! Have to put in a guess because I covet the colors: book "The Knitting Stich Bible" (I got this for a gift and like it so I would guess some one else might too) some yarn by fleece artist) and caramels because you mentioned you like them. Fingers crossed :-)

Posted by: Bridget at January 1, 2006 11:09 PM

I don't have any guesses but I do have birthday greetings--Happy Birthday Cara!!

Posted by: Collette at January 1, 2006 11:19 PM

Happy Birthday Cara! Happy New Year too!
My guess is a signed copy of Vintage Socks and some of Nancy's (local) sock yarn to make em. Plus some Utah caramels :)

Posted by: Debi at January 1, 2006 11:19 PM

I think she sent you some circular needles, some koigu to make beautiful socks, and some snow!

Posted by: Alison at January 1, 2006 11:46 PM

Just to be different, I"ll say she sent you a realistic looking baby stylised out of gummi worms.

Well, that, or some STR.

Posted by: Renata at January 2, 2006 12:02 AM

OK, so I am dropping by a little late but it is, in fact, still January 1 here in California. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

How nice to show up just to say hi and happy birthday and discover that there is a contest going on. Oh so thrilling! :)

I'm guessing sock yarn, book/magazine and something completely unrelated to knitting. Maybe booze. Then again, booze would sometimes qualify as knitting related!

I hope it was a wonderful day!

Posted by: Kristy at January 2, 2006 12:57 AM

Cara,
First, I wish you a very happy birthday :) (January One is not over yet here!). Second, thanks for posting my socks! Third is my guess for the box--I think that inside the box is another box, and in that, among other things, may be a set of wool carders! The perfect thing for someone who just got a wheel (if it isn't, you should get some for yourself, just because they're fun).

Posted by: Katherine at January 2, 2006 02:21 AM

Feliz cumpleanos! The beginning of January is a great time for birthdays (my brother's and dad's are tomorrow and Tuesday).

I hope you enjoyed finally being able to open your gift. I was going to guess the ol' Socks that Rock and rocks combo, but that seems to be a popular choice. I think I'll go with- Socks that Rock and rock candy (instead of Junior caramels). And a spinning-wheel-related gizmo. Being totally ignorant of all things spinning-wheel-related, I'll say a Woolee Winder. Not sure what it does, but I remember reading someone blog about how useful it was. :)

Posted by: jen. at January 2, 2006 03:03 AM

Hi Cara:
I am guessing, of all the wonderful things in this ole world, you are getting a Autographed photo of Bruce...and a Pet Rock named Bruce, and
lets see, Bruce Jaywalker Socks? Woo Hoo...You go girl!!! I Love that Sock Yarn..Socks Rock.
(I am looking forward to seeing Just what is in that Box!!!)

Posted by: Gail Lucille at January 2, 2006 04:01 AM

What a large amount of comments. Little wonder, though.

As for the box, I would guess... um, a knitting and/or spinning related book (no clue on the specifics though), fiber AND yarn, and some sort of edible just for good measure. Sounds a bit too normal though...

Happy [slightly]belated birthday! Only two hours earlier and I would have gotten the greeting in on the actual day. Ah well, close enough I suppose.

Posted by: Hannah at January 2, 2006 05:21 AM

Er, that is, two hours over here. A few more where you are, it seems.

Posted by: Hannah at January 2, 2006 05:22 AM

I believe you have been gifted with those 'Clear Clogs' you've been lusting over for Rhinebeck NY!

Posted by: Debbie at January 2, 2006 06:50 AM

Definitely some STR yarn - since you love it so much. And a special book for your birthday. But I like the idea of some rocks from Utah thrown in too.

Posted by: Lisa at January 2, 2006 07:28 AM

Hmmm...spindles and fiber and chocolate would all be good guesses. But I think that it's a pony. ;)

Posted by: Katy at January 2, 2006 08:22 AM

Holy crap! I have been scrolling down for-ever! Rocks from Margene and some Lorna's Laces. :)

Posted by: Kathleen at January 2, 2006 08:30 AM

Holy crap! I have been scrolling down for-ever! Rocks from Margene and some Lorna's Laces. :)

Posted by: Kathleen at January 2, 2006 08:30 AM

Doh...what happened there...must have been Scooby! Happy Birthday!!

Posted by: Kathleen at January 2, 2006 08:31 AM

Hummmm not really sure whats inside but I can't WAIT to see :)
My guess is some kind of knitting book you've been waiting for, of course some sock yarn, something with a sheep on it (I mean who could resist those fluffy guys, chocolate and maybe some stitch markers or knitting utensils.
Happy Birthday!!!!

Posted by: Kelly at January 2, 2006 09:08 AM

I really wasn't going to enter, but here goes...
Nancy Bush's new sock book, some Koigu and something gummi.
Happy Birthday!

Posted by: liz at January 2, 2006 10:36 AM

I have no idea what is in that box. Margene sent me a wonderful hand made journal, maybe that is part of it. Maybe some yummy sweet thing, because, well no explanation is needed for sweets, probably some book, because she loves books and so do you. Maybe something for you to write with! That's it, a journal to keep notes for your writing!

One thing I know with absolute certainty is in that box is a lot of LOVE for YOU!!!!! That is really Margene's way.

Hope it was so hap, hap, happy! And that you really are loved by so many. Jeesh, I'm getting sappy in my old age, I need to go beat something up now. :)

Posted by: Teresa C at January 2, 2006 12:35 PM

A rock in a sock, some fiber, some candy, and a new sock book for inspiration.

Posted by: Julie H. at January 2, 2006 01:03 PM

I NEVER win contests, but I couldn't resist trying when I saw that awesome yarn. My lame-o guess: Candles, solid sock yarn, and another shibori kit.

Hope you had a Happy Birthday, Cara! I am going back to my Jaywalkers very soon. :)

Posted by: Laura at January 2, 2006 02:34 PM

Happy Birthday - what a great haul of stuff you have! My partner's birthday is Jan 9 and he notes that "birthdays close to Christmas suck" but you seem to do well enough. My guess - how about some knit socks with rocks in them? Or more seriously, some spindles, chocolate and sock yarn.

Posted by: Siew at January 2, 2006 02:49 PM

I bet it is some yarn, and a pattern book. I hope you had a great birthday.

Posted by: Kristin at January 2, 2006 03:04 PM

i'm guessing a swift and and winder, with some sock forms/blockers/stretchers thrown in.

btw-i'm hoping to start on my first pair of jaywalkers this week! yeeha!

many happy returns on the day after your birthday. :-)

Posted by: elaine at January 2, 2006 03:40 PM

An assortment of things--candy, beauty/bath products, some sock yarn. Maybe one of those pinhole cameras they have on FredFlare.com?

Posted by: Jasmin at January 2, 2006 03:58 PM

tasty treats and fiber goodness ;-) or something else

Posted by: Melissa at January 2, 2006 05:02 PM

Ok, let's see.... I think Margene would definately include more yarn, that's a given. Needles- maybe hand crafted?? And something Bruce- (you said the box was heavy- I'm guessing a MUG perhaps). And edible goodies of some sort- if she has already sent Jr. Caramels, it must be something else, but CHOCOLATE I'm guessing.

Happy Birthday Cara!

Kim in Ohio who enjoys reading your blog and envys your Jaywalkers!

Posted by: Kim at January 2, 2006 05:03 PM

My guess is chocolate and a book...the chocolate works for my wife anyway!

Posted by: Greg at January 2, 2006 05:34 PM

i'm guessing you've got a box of home-made fudge, some neat sock yarn, a nice card (that won't make any noise shaken around) and this cool spinning kit (http://www.helloyarn.com/spindlekits.htm). and maybe some caramels thrown in, for fun. no rocks, though.
happy b-day, holidays and new year!
michal

Posted by: michal Wright at January 2, 2006 05:38 PM

Happy Bday (one day late)
Anyway, in the box...
well.
Clearly there must be fiber... I think it's more sox that rocks yarn for YOU -- enough for several pair, or perhaps a shawl?
And maybe some special stitch markers for good measure.

Posted by: Helen at January 2, 2006 06:40 PM

Happy Birthday, Cara! I think that Margene sent coal and sticks...and thought that the anticipation would kill you before you opened it :) Ok, Ok...Margene is nicer than that. How about a sock knitting book, stitch markers and a big, rich chocolate bar?

Posted by: Marilyn at January 2, 2006 07:12 PM

Belated Happy Birthday. If Bruce wasn't in the box then there better have been some good yarn and treats.

Posted by: Cathy at January 2, 2006 07:22 PM

Socks that Rock...and a Rock to make it heavy.

Happy Birthday.

Posted by: Jennifer at January 2, 2006 07:27 PM

Socks "with" rocks!!! that is my guess ...Glad you had a Happy Day..you deserve it!!

Posted by: SusanneS at January 2, 2006 09:09 PM

Happy happy birthday!

My prediction of what's in that box: 2 books, and 2 pair's worth of sock yarn. And chocolate.

Posted by: Margot at January 2, 2006 09:19 PM

Happy birthday!

I'm betting your pretty dang heavy box has a pretty dang heavy book about knitting pretty dang heavy socks.

And some pretty dang yummy chonklits.

And some string, er, yarn - fluffy.

And some clever novelty knitting item, like a spring loaded tape measure that retracts into the sheep's belly.

Although I could be wrong.

Posted by: Rob at January 2, 2006 09:21 PM

Happy birthday!

I believe you've been given yarn, stitch markers, and maybe a jar of olives. Why a jar of olives? Because that was the strange present I recently received that was unidentifiable in the box, very heavy and rattled a small bit, but not much. Hey, it's worth a shot and I didn't expect it to be a jar of olives either!
