I is for

Island
Anguilla, to be specific. Georgie and I got home last night (late last night) from our wonderful Island vacation. I've never been to the Caribbean and let's just say I'm converted. The weather was wonderful - hot and humid for sure, but the nice steady breeze kept us cool. Our hotel room was beautiful, with wood shuttered doors that opened up the living room onto the balcony, which looked straight out into the water. There's nothing like lying in bed looking out at the ocean. The bathroom was all glass and mirrors - literally. The back wall, where the bathtub and shower were located, was glass and the shower had two doors - one into the bathroom and one out to the balcony off the shower. Here's a picture. The people of Anguilla were incredibly friendly. Always with a handshake, everyone you met asked how your day was going and if there was anything they could do for you. And pretty much everyone I spoke to was born there. If I lived in such a paradise, I probably wouldn't leave either.
The one thing, though, that really got me was the water. I love water and I love to swim - but I'm very particular about it. I generally don't like the ocean - I hate salt water and I hate stepping on things and I don't want other stuff swimming out there with me. And while I love to swim in pools - I hate hate hate cold water. We have a pool at our apartment and I'd swim in it every day if I could but it's not heated. The water in Anguilla was not only the perfect temperature, the sand underneath your feet was like baby powder. Clean and clear, the water was so incredibly soft on your skin. I just felt so good to be in it, it was everything G could do to pull me out. I hope you enjoy my photographs. I wish I was there right now.
A proper post tomorrow about how all I did was knit squares from the minute we left for the airport to go to Anguilla until the minute I feel asleep on the cab ride home from the airport. That is, of course, when I wasn't in the water. Thanks for stopping by.

Okay, you know where I am from and I still can't get over how beautiful that ocean is! WOW!
Glad you had a good time!

I totally [almost] thought those were catalogue pictures until I saw your feet...then I saw the squares. How beautiful! I'm more relaxed just looking at those pictures.

Oh, dreamy... I love your toes!! And the squares -- hanging from the umbrella and arranged on the sand, I can't help but think of mariner's flags. I wonder what they mean? ; )
Interesting... I've never been to the Caribbean, either, and haven't ever had a desire to go.
I is glad you're back, too. ; )
Posted by: Vicki at May 18, 2006 11:23 PM

Oh, how beautiful! Did the green squares survive the sand? They look great hanging there in the wind. I'm glad you had a relaxing vacation.
Posted by: Jessica at May 19, 2006 12:42 AM
Oh my. I want to be there. It's more of an ache, really. Your photos are lovely. Your squares, how could they bear to leave?
Posted by: kathy in juneau at May 19, 2006 01:08 AM
You need to take a couple days to decompress - that looks absolutely fantastic. The photos of the squares on the beach will hold us for a couple days

ohh!!! It looks like heaven :-)
Fantastic photos, you really are an artist, I could almost feel the sand between my toes.
Living on an Island I am surrounded by the sea but somehow it always looks better on someone else's island :-)

Posted by: Lucia at May 19, 2006 07:06 AM
My DH said something about maybe vacationing in the Caribbean sometime. I'd never really thought about it, but seeing your pictures, I'm seriously tempted now.
Posted by: Alison at May 19, 2006 07:24 AM
Your photography is beautiful! I had no idea that you took all of the beautiful photographs I see on your site. I have never been to the Caribbean and now I must go! My husband and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary, maybe this should be the trip. Do you mind me asking, where you stayed on the island?
Posted by: Nancy at May 19, 2006 08:00 AM
We all wish we were there right now. It must be heaven but you photos make it look even more so. The colors look so pure and surreal. We forget life can be as magical and as beautiful as a post card.
Posted by: margene at May 19, 2006 08:04 AM
I sure wish I was there now (instead of in front of this computer at work!) thank you for capturing the amazing scenes and sharing them with us! It looks like you had your own private beach! ;)

Posted by: liz at May 19, 2006 08:29 AM
I might have to pick your brain on that one, Cara, because the husband and I are thinking Christmastime would be a great time for us to get away, after all the crap of this upcoming summer...And Cuba, where everyone in Canada seems to go, is just not doin' it for me. I want calm.
So glad you had a relaxing time!
Posted by: Lee Ann at May 19, 2006 08:35 AM
Glorious photos ... they make me want to hop right on a plane.
Posted by: Ruth at May 19, 2006 08:38 AM
Cara, so glad you're back...though you likely aren't. Did you really put those squares right down on the sand? Must have truly been some special sand.
Posted by: Julie at May 19, 2006 08:54 AM
Welcome home. The pictures are gorgeous! I must get to the Carribean again soon. I'm totally with you about the ocean and cold water issues too. My fear of cold water is legendary.

That's how I felt about Kauai - this has been here all along? And I didn't know about it?
The picture of the knitting pinned to the line under the umbrella? Absolutely gorgeous, striking, the colors, the movement and line. Love it.

It really is my favorite place in the world. Did you get to here the song, "You Must Come Back to Anguilla". I love the pics.

Ooh I feel all relaxed now looking at your pictures. Really beautiful. I loved the Bahamas when I went it's so peaceful to be near the Ocean especially when it's so clean and clear.
My only question is did you have problems getting the sand out of the squares after you took the pictures;)?

I was admiring your photos and thinking to myself, "Hey, that looks like Cap Jaluca". Then I scroll down and read your post, Anguilla! No wonder! It's a beautiful place. My husband and I went there for our 40th's a few years back. I love the photo of your squares hanging on the umbrella.
