My Lips are Sealed

You know. What happens in Lawn Guyland, stays in Lawn Guyland. Not really, but I only took out the camera when there was work to be done (yes, it was a semi-working holiday) and everything's more entertaining with pictures, don't you think? I will say this: there was lots of discussion about tomatoes in season, Vicki's pin-up choices, Jim Croce and The Lady in the Water. Fun times, as always.

Oh yeah. And right before I was leaving for the long trek home, I finished these:

Want to see the other side?

I love them.

DETAILS: Knit on Size #1 Addi Turbo circulars, I used this knee high pattern to figure out the increasing and decreasing. Eventually I made it down to my standard 64 stitch sock. The yarn is Socks That Rock, Jewel of the Nile colorway, two 325 yd skeins. I had 5/8ths of an oz remaining for each sock. Straight stockinette socks. I'm not sure what else there is to tell but ask in the comments if you think of something. [ETA: The shoes are Naot Sea. Very comfortable.]

This is how I would have envisioned wearing my fabulously fantastic new knee highs, if I was, say, ten years younger.

Alas, this is how I will probably be seen wearing the knee highs. (Well, only really seen by my husband and any unlucky neighbors that happen to catch me on the balcony checking the weather. Or peeping through the windows. Ew. Gross. Stop that!)

And, of course, no sock post is complete without the patent pending Sock Shot®. Everyone's doing it.

(Just so you know, I flipped the picture. Liked it better this way.)

Alrighty. I'm off to finish the little bit of plying I have left and then I don't know - I might try to do a toe-up cast on again because I'm really itching to try this toe up heel flap sock. I want to start knitting through my STR stash and I have a lot of 325 yd skeins so I don't want to waste a single stitch. Or I could clean up my house. Decisions, decisions.

I think you could indeed pull of a public school girl look!

OK, so do you have little machines built into your arms? Good thing there aren't speeding tickets for knitting! Really great socks though!

Posted by: Carol at August 23, 2006 12:44 PM

The socks are fab and match both outfits perfectly well. The big question, though, is Where did you get those shoes??? I love them and they perfectly complement the handknit socks.

Posted by: Jenna at August 23, 2006 12:56 PM

OH MY, I'm loving that look! Very Deadhead meets Catholic school girl.

Posted by: Kristina at August 23, 2006 01:45 PM

You know, I think those socks are worth a peeping tom; they're gorgeous!

Posted by: kelly at August 23, 2006 01:54 PM

Cute socks. You could wear them under pants on really cold winter days to keep your legs warm.

Posted by: Stephanie at August 23, 2006 01:54 PM

Hey little grrl...wanna play?
What's this about cleaning the house? Go knit, grrl!

Posted by: margene at August 23, 2006 01:57 PM

Fantastic socks! I am SO itching to knit me a pair of knee-highs! Gotta finish my Crusoes first though.

Posted by: Nonnahs at August 23, 2006 02:00 PM

The socks are fabulous (and I am totally in love with those shoes).
I know you struggled with a toe up cast on before. Have you tried the Turkish cast on? I used to really dislike toe-up socks, but since discovering how easy this cast on is, I'm more apt to knit socks toe up.
Good luck!

Posted by: Rachel at August 23, 2006 02:01 PM

sooooo cute!! I love the way the colors kept changing throughout, makes it look like you kept changing yarns. you must wear them out, even if it's under jeans!

try the turkish cast on next, that's my fave since it's so easy. and if you're knitting via magic loop, you dont need any extra needles : )

Posted by: yahaira at August 23, 2006 02:02 PM

lllloooooooove the socks! the knee highs are soooo cute for the fall! and i definitely think that you can pull off the knee high/skirt/rockin' shoes combo. why not?

Posted by: gleek at August 23, 2006 02:05 PM

They look fantastic! Love them. Hope they're all you want them to be.

Posted by: Ann at August 23, 2006 02:11 PM

OMG. Stunning socks. Thud.

Posted by: Lucia at August 23, 2006 02:11 PM

Why do you need to be 10 years younger? Fantastic socks, cool shoes, need to be shown off together.

Posted by: Rachel H at August 23, 2006 02:15 PM

Wearrrrrr themmmmm ouuuuuuuuuuuuut! You got the gams for it, whatcha waitin' for?

xx0x0x0x0 Hope your Lawn Guyland trip was fabby.

Love the socks with those shoes! I love my Dansko Mary Jane's, but even after months of wear the leather tends to lose color on my socks. Now I'm afraid to wear my handknits in them. And I'm not sure I can do Crocs so I'll have to check out these Naot Sea's you're showing off.

Posted by: Toby at August 23, 2006 02:25 PM

You could TOTALLY pull off the cute little mary janes and skirt with those fab socks. I'm smitten with those socks, by golly.

Posted by: regina at August 23, 2006 02:26 PM

Oh, those socks are fab... but the SHOES! I MUST have those shoes!

Posted by: Beth S. at August 23, 2006 02:26 PM

The pooling section looks to me like the rings on a log of wood that has been cut sideways. Do you know what I mean?

Posted by: LaurieM at August 23, 2006 02:26 PM

Love the socks. And from now on, I will refer to the sock shot by its official name, complete with registered trademark. Honest.

Posted by: Wendy at August 23, 2006 02:29 PM

You need to make a decision about cleaning the house? Seriously? Okay, go to Mason Dixon and see what Ann's been doing. *That* should help you decide!

(by the way, seriously cool sox)

Posted by: inky at August 23, 2006 02:36 PM

You have to wear the socks with the skirt because if you're too old, then I'm WAY too old.

I really want to wear knee highs again before I die. With square-toed saddle shoes.

Miss you tragically, and so does the Lady in the Water. xox Kay

Am I the only one that noticed they complete each other when side by side like that? It's like it was done intentionally to show a whole pattern when put side by side....maybe I'm just weird. ;-)

I love how they turned out. Absolutely wonderful. Yup, I definitely have to make me a pair, now. What a lovely inspiration. Beautiful work :-)

Posted by: Kittie at August 23, 2006 03:09 PM

I LOVE these socks! Do it again, do it again!

Posted by: Ann at August 23, 2006 03:24 PM

First of all, great socks! And since when do we even stop to think about whether to knit or clean the house?! Hellooooooooo...

Posted by: Annie at August 23, 2006 03:48 PM

Debating cleaning vs knitting?
Cara, are you feeling all right?

Posted by: trek at August 23, 2006 03:55 PM

what is this cleaning thing you are talking about? don't know that word, but i do know knitting and i say DO IT. the kneehighs are fantastic! supercute! yeah!

Posted by: kris at August 23, 2006 04:06 PM

The socks are fabulous. I love the "at home" look better than the school girl look anyway.

Posted by: Carole at August 23, 2006 04:41 PM

Love the socks! I'm seriously going to have make myself a pair.

Posted by: Kelly at August 24, 2006 07:41 AM

J.E.A.L.O.U.S.

I will follow this pattern next time, instead of my ill-fated knee high pattern.

They look great, C, as do the shoes! ;)

Posted by: Lolly at August 24, 2006 07:52 AM

I'm catching up!! I was here last night, but so tired... I had to bookmark.

The socks are FABULOUS! Freakin' FABULOUS!!

What in the world with Jim Croce? Bad, bad, Leroy Brown?? May I please say that you do NOT have my complete list of pin-up choices... I declare that this is still open for further discussion. ; )

Screw the hous cleaning, go in for fibery goodness.

Posted by: E to the M at August 24, 2006 09:45 AM

They look amazing!

Posted by: Jennifer at August 24, 2006 11:24 AM

Omigod. WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE SHOES?

I heart them!

Posted by: Libby at August 24, 2006 02:03 PM

So pretty - they're fraternal twins! Although I love the idea of knee highs, there ain't no going there with my cankles. You, however, could pull off the look today - despite your protests.

And can I just say that I love the way the picture changes on your blog? I've often refreshed up to 10 times just to see if there's one I've missed in the past.

xox,

i am loving the knee high with mary janes look-you should totally go for it! i'm finding that as i get older (i'm 41), i'm more willing to take fashion risks than i was 20.

can you tell me what brand/style those mary janes are? i've been looking for some to wear in the winter with skirts and tights and those might be the ticket...

Posted by: elaine at August 25, 2006 08:32 AM

Most EXCELLENT spinning!!! Beautiful colors too!

Posted by: Mia at August 25, 2006 12:30 PM

very cute!

Posted by: vanessa at August 25, 2006 04:44 PM

I loved watching you work on these and they look absolutely fantastic!

Posted by: Suzanne at August 29, 2006 11:30 AM

I love the patented sock shot. I usually manage to twist my hip around in some uncharted direction to get something bloggable.

Posted by: Laurie at August 29, 2006 03:59 PM

Absolutely fabulous -- the socks, the shoes, the photos! I've never knit a pair of knee-highs, but am starting to think I should...

Posted by: nona at August 30, 2006 10:32 AM

Great socks!!! Oh and I adore those shoes. I would opt for the knitting over cleaning. I always do. :)

Posted by: Kimberly at August 31, 2006 12:07 AM

love the wavy effect of colors - yum!
