Belly Envy

Hey Shirley - this one's for you!

At Rhinebeck this weekend, envy was in full force. You had your yarn envy, fiber envy, fleece envy, sweater (not so much - it was too hot!) envy, shawl envy, sock envy, spindle envy, sheep envy, wheel envy. You name it people wanted it.

All I wanted was a bigger belly. MAN! This Rhinebeck was all about the babies and the strollers and the pregnant chicks. I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed. Every five seconds I saw another pregnant lady whose belly was bigger than mine. In fact, the first thing I said to Sarah was NO FAIR! Look how cute your belly is!

Wonder Blog Fetus Twins ACTIVATE!

(Picture borrowed from Sarah's blog.)
In case you've been living in a cave, Sarah and I are both pregnant. She's actually due two days before me (her baby's due on Good Friday and my baby's due on Easter. This Jew girl married to a Greek Orthodox finds that super funny!) which means we might as well be due the same second in gestational time. We've had eerily parallel pregnancies - complete with puking at 18 weeks (although Sarah, I'm really sorry to tell you that I've now gone two days with no pukage. I'm not calling it a trend. Three days is a trend. Two is just a happy coincidence.) and it's really wonderful to have someone, out there in the world, who COMPLETELY UNDERSTANDS. Not understands because they went through it a million years ago - but completely understands because they're doing it RIGHT NOW with you! [ETA: No offense to every woman who's ever had a baby before me - I know you know how I feel. But how cool is it to have someone going through it with you NOW? Right now!] It was so great to hang out and compare notes and I love that if we both end up at Rhinebeck next year we can take the same picture with our babies on the OUTSIDE. How cool is that? Thank you Sarah. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the fact that you're still throwing up.

Anyway, back to the bellies. My belly isn't actually that small. And I kind of popped a little bit the other day. It's just that the boobs are so freaking huge they overshadow the belly. I like to say I've reached B Porn Star Fetish Status. I asked Ann if she thought my belly would ever over take the boobage and she told me yeah. The day before you go into labor.

To all of those ladies suffering boob envy - trust me on this: they are SO overrated.

I remember when my belly finally popped out and I finally looked pregnant and not just fat. It was so cool when it was larger than my boobage. I was also glad when the boobage went away after the nursing stopped, though. I don't know what women who have large breasts do with them all the time. They get in the way!

It's all about perspective. Those of us who get porn star boobs when preggers- simply have smaller bellies in comparison to the boobage.

It's trompe 'loile or something;)

it's the perfect belly for your baby- thats all it needs to be;)

It's also perfectly cute- btw;)

When you showed me your belly Friday night I thought it looked just perfect. As for remembering being pregnant, it was 16 years ago, not a million years ago, and I remember it all like it was last week. I bet you will, too, when you look back on this time. I guess seeing another pregnant woman makes us all reflect back on our own experience and then we want to share.

Posted by: Carole at October 24, 2007 03:39 PM

Funny, I had belly envy when I was there too. I'm not pregnant though.

Posted by: Jennifer at October 24, 2007 03:57 PM

Don't you look cute!

Posted by: margene at October 24, 2007 04:00 PM

Believe me, once you have the belly for a while you'll wish you could go incognito at least once a day. Perhaps it will be when the millionth person claims you are having a Christmas baby, rather than being due three months past Christmas or perhaps it will be during the umpteenth comment about how you must be having twins or what ever the scenario might be... Appreciate your girls and that you aren't putting on weight - you are WAY cute!

Posted by: Natalie at October 24, 2007 04:08 PM

You two look adorable.

Here's hoping "happy coincidence" turns into a trend.

Posted by: earthchick at October 24, 2007 04:09 PM

When I was 7 months along, I had a joint baby shower with a friend who delivered 2 weeks ahead of me. We stood back to back, took a picture and then played, "Guess how many inches it is to go around BOTH of us?" Don't remember who won, but I still have the picture. There's nothing quite like sharing your experience with someone who is going through the same thing.

Blessings!

Oy, just wait until your milk comes in (if you're planning on BFing). WOW!! Talk about gonzagas! I'm a D cup normally, and mine were like FOOTBALLS - that big and about that hard.

Your baby bump is beautiful! And hopefully the puke is gone for good!

Posted by: Amanda at October 24, 2007 05:11 PM

Awwww, love the bellies!

Posted by: Kirsten at October 24, 2007 05:17 PM

Just wait, the boobs will get even bigger when your milk comes in full force!!!!

Posted by: Allegra at October 24, 2007 05:19 PM

Yeah, the boobs are a real pain, and I have baby boobs ALL THE TIME! I was just born with them. They do get in the way of everything, particularly eating. I have always wished that I could be the kind of person who, when she misses her mouth with the spaghetti, could have it fall into her lap, instead of ALL THE WAY down her chest!

Fingers crossed on the puking, and just try to be patient. Ditto what Natalie said. You'll look REALLY pregnant soon enough.

Posted by: LeighB in ATL at October 24, 2007 05:19 PM

There is something really cool about having someone else go through the preggers thing at the same time as you! Also, I agree that the boobs are overrated...I still can't wear any of my prepreg shirts thanks to them!

Posted by: sarah b. at October 24, 2007 05:28 PM

You two look very happy :-) Congrats... believe me, your belly will get bigger, dont worry :-) then you will have flat tummy envy :-) LOL

Posted by: Courtney at October 24, 2007 05:31 PM

I appreciate the fact that you're still throwing up, too. Or rather, that you're not throwing up now, because it gives me hope. See, it's a win-win: you throw up, I feel like I have company; you don't, I feel like there's an end in sight! Perfect!

And I'm so with you for this picture next year with the babies instead of the bellies - I can't wait!

Posted by: Sarah at October 24, 2007 05:37 PM

You both look adorable. People say the shittiest things to pregnant ladies and they really shouldn't. I would be interested to know if this is Sarah's first pregnancy. If not, that might account to her pop being a tad larger. And the fetish tits? Never went down . . . and I hate that.

Posted by: Ava at October 24, 2007 05:49 PM

You two look so cute with your bellies! I'm pregnant with my second (also due in March - the 29th!) and let me jes tell ya... I did not have hugeboobs the first time until I started breast feeding. Then, when I stopped breast feeding, they deflated (thankfully), though they were smaller (and farther south) than before the pregnancy. With this pregnancy, however, I already have hugeboobs, and I'm really not so much enjoying them. They are horribly in the way.

As for wanting a bigger belly... it's not all it's cracked up to be. I carried my first ALL OUT FRONT. Seriously, by 20 weeks I looked like I was smuggling a beach ball under my shirt! Unfortunately, every inch you grown during pregnancy equals about a half inch that won't shrink back down later. You might want a bigger belly now, but when it's over & you're trying to fit back into your own clothes again, you'll be happy for those extra inches you didn't get!

Posted by: kelly at October 24, 2007 06:02 PM

About ten years from now, you're going to look at your stomach and say, "I remember when I wanted to look pregnant. This stomach can go away now." That's a direct quote from me! I was so excited to look pregnant. After 5 kids, I don't need to look pregnant any more. The boobs can go away too, or at the very lest move back up north!

Posted by: Maria at October 24, 2007 06:15 PM

that Ann sounds like a very wise and wonderful person. I bet she is really pretty too.

Posted by: anonymous at October 24, 2007 06:54 PM

i remember my belly just popping one day. the day before i just looked overweight, and then POW i looked preggers :) i've heard that with the second child you pop almost immediately. anyway, you look great!

Posted by: gleek at October 24, 2007 07:08 PM

Big boobs are SO over-rated! It was very very nice to meet you, even if you were feeling crummy (and I'm so sorry you were).

Posted by: Amy at October 24, 2007 07:17 PM

so cute! i love that picture. i have belly envy too. . if only to hold my damn pants up.

Posted by: megan at October 24, 2007 07:23 PM

Wicked cute bellies! (and no kidding about the boobage thing!)

Posted by: lisa at October 24, 2007 07:34 PM

Too cute! My sil and were pregnant at the same time, we were due within a week of each other. It was great. We would call each other up and complain and compare. Our daughters are very alike to this day!

Posted by: Meghann at October 24, 2007 07:50 PM

At first I thought that was two pictures put together - the way so many elements of the background were split down the middle (right between your bellies, in fact).

I know what you mean - my best friend and I were pregnant at the same time, due a few weeks apart, and it made it so much better. She's trying again, but she's out of luck this time. :)

Posted by: jenfromri at October 24, 2007 07:55 PM

I'm so jealous of all the bellies I see! I'm at 15 weeks and I can't wait to be really showing. And yes, the boobs are way overrated (mine finally have past the point of no return and I have to order of the internet!)

I can't wait to be big enough for people to start asking me when I'm due. When does that start?

Posted by: aimee noel at October 24, 2007 07:56 PM

You look glowing and gorgeous and all like that. I know puking sucks, but you look like pregnancy really agrees with you! Sorry I missed seeing you glow in person at Rhinebeck!

Posted by: Anne at October 24, 2007 08:05 PM

Hilarious! It was wonderful to see you. Your belly was right in there as this year's Rhinebeck accessory, for sure.

Posted by: Laurie at October 24, 2007 08:29 PM

Minus the puking and the massive boobage, isn't pregnancy amazing? I swear I lost many things under my huge boobs while preggers and nursing....remotes, pencils, knitting needles. I'm so glad they shrunk down to a normal size after nursing for 2 years.

Posted by: Wannabe at October 24, 2007 08:47 PM

love the photo.. and don't worry, the belly grows.
hey, now maybe that is a future post title..."as the belly grows" (grin)

Posted by: Teyani at October 24, 2007 09:06 PM

You look completely adorable! And yes, it is more fun when there's someone right there with ya. I'm so thrilled about yesterday! I can tell you this, I was pregnant a million years ago and with both, I remember to this day the undescribable thrill of that feeling! There's nothing quite like it. Here's wishing you more puke free days!

Posted by: Carol at October 24, 2007 09:37 PM

hahaha i was so gonna say something about your boobies ;-) this B girl is somewhat jealous! haha you look great and i wish you more puke-free days as well!!

Posted by: margaux at October 24, 2007 10:18 PM

Being over-cleavaged *and* pregnant really sucks. You don't look pregnant for the longest time and clothes STILL don't fit right. Not the nicest combo in the world.

But I have to say, that's a really cute bump!

Posted by: Kathy at October 24, 2007 10:44 PM

Well I was a B prio to prego and now I'm a C at 6 weeks Post Partum. I wish I was a B again, I never ever had boob envy :(

At work I had a buddy due 10 days after me, we had our babies the same day both with inductions, same doctor (weird concidence as we sit right next to each other and never talked prior to being pregnant. I even saw her and her boy at the hospital. It was SO much fun having someone to go through it with who was at the same "stage" of things. All you want to do is like, bitch about it with someone who gets it and won't say "oh its worth it" "oh itll be over soon" or "oh wait till the baby is hear you will wish you where pregnant again. Um no I won't and no I don't lol. She gets you, like no one else possibly can at this exact moment in time :)

Posted by: pixie at October 24, 2007 11:04 PM

Belly on the left is a girl and the belly on the right is a boy. Just sayin.....

Posted by: SandyK at October 25, 2007 01:43 AM

Heh. I was wondering how many people would chime in with the old "just wait till your milk comes in." Sick of hearing it? I was too. And then my milk came in. Holy crap. Ridiculous. And it happens overnight. You wake up the third day and your breasts are threatening to conquer the universe.

Ah, memories.

And now I've been nursing for so long I can't remember what my breasts looked like before.

Here's hoping for a third puke-free day.

Posted by: cari at October 25, 2007 02:28 AM

You both look so cute! Enjoy every moment...well, not the puke days.

Posted by: Robin in VA at October 25, 2007 08:38 AM

Y'all look so cute!!!! And yeah, I have the permanent big boobs and they're great for getting people to do things for me, but not so great when I see awesome button-down shirts. The gapping! Jeez! I'm not sure there's been a single shopping trip where I haven't announced at least once that supposedly big booobs are the ideal so why the heck aren't there more shirts tailored to accomodate them? Sorry, I hijacked my own comment to rant. Let's just go back to focusing on how cute you both look!

Posted by: Scribbles & Bits at October 25, 2007 09:32 AM

Let's just say I had a golf swing before children. After, I played once; the woman I played with said, "you can't go over them (ouch), and you can't swing when you are under them either..." Ah well. I embrace who I am today, mostly because breast reduction surgery is sooo pricey. And all that golf money goes into yarn....Glad you are feeling better. Blue skies!

Posted by: Lark at October 25, 2007 10:32 AM

Are you do on Greek Easter or Western Easter? Or are they the same next year? Which means I have to get my act together and iron out the family issue (actually, must deal with Christmas first).

Posted by: cath at October 25, 2007 12:42 PM

Aww I miss my Belly!! Plus it is so cool later on when you can 'see' the movement from the outside!

check out the birth clubs on www.babycenter.com
You can chat with a TON of women from your particular birth month. But do watch out - some are very hormonal!

Posted by: Deana at October 25, 2007 04:08 PM

Heh. Think those are huge? Just wait 'til your milk comes in! ;)

Posted by: Romi at October 25, 2007 09:18 PM

Just as some of the other poster commented,,, wait till bout 3 days after giving birth. Ya gonna feel like you have watermelons swinging from your chest. That to shall pass,,, all in good time!

Posted by: Nancy at October 25, 2007 10:13 PM

You two totally look cute!

You two look so cute! I just love this photo!

Posted by: Lolly at October 26, 2007 10:51 PM

would think the boobs start getting in the way right about now. Great photo!

Posted by: Debbie at October 27, 2007 06:44 PM

yeah, yeah:: you say that now. but just wait until the milk comes in!! pamela anderson will have Nothin' on you. not that i usually talk about such things with strangers... all the best, again and again!!

Posted by: kelli ann at October 29, 2007 09:04 AM

Totally with you on the boobs. After nursing four kids, they are no longer an erotic part of the body, just left-over droopy baby bottles. My theory on breasts is they should be like umbilical cords: when they lose their usefulness, they should dry up, turn black and fall off!
